Carissa Martin, LPC Senior Associate & Clinical Supervisor

Carissa Martin is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia and serves as Senior Associate and Clinical Supervisor at Family Wellness Group. Over 12 years, she has worked across community mental health, inpatient care, and jail-based services, with particular depth in substance use and personality disorders. She is certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Discernment Counseling.

Carissa works with adults, teens, couples, and families. Her areas of focus include trauma and birth trauma, LGBTQ+ affirming care, neurodivergent clients, substance use, family relationships, and life transitions. She also helps clients set healthier boundaries and build stronger relationships. Her experience includes providing expert testimony.

Carissa’s approach

Clients often say they appreciate Carissa’s warm, down-to-earth style. She believes therapy doesn’t have to feel stiff or intimidating. There is room for difficult emotions and experiences, and there is also room for humor, connection, and relatability. Sometimes a little laughter brings perspective and a reminder that growth doesn’t always have to feel heavy.

Carissa doesn’t fit clients into a single model. She tailors the work to each person, drawing on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), trauma-informed CBT, and solution-focused therapy, along with real-life experience. As your goals evolve, the work adapts with them.

“I believe you are the expert on your own life, and my role is to provide guidance, support, and practical tools to help you navigate challenges and work toward your goals.” (Carissa)

What to expect

Working with Carissa is warm and collaborative. She’ll take time to learn about your experiences, strengths, relationships, and the parts of your life that matter most to you. Because therapy is also a place for growth, she may gently challenge patterns, beliefs, or behaviors that keep you stuck.
